About Nice and the Côte d’Azur, 1967
Nice et la Côte d’Azur comprises 12 color lithographs made by Charles Sorlier after compositions by Marc Chagall. Published by Mourlot in Paris in 1967, the series combines Riviera landscapes with lovers, bouquets, mermaids and other recurring Chagall subjects. Documented impressions include examples signed in pencil by Chagall.
The Twelve Compositions

Charles Sorlier and the Edition
Sorlier translated Chagall’s compositions into lithography. The attribution “Charles Sorlier after Marc Chagall” identifies that process. We review the specific edition, handwritten signature and catalogue entry together when evaluating a sheet.
| Edition or designation | What we review |
|---|---|
| Edition of 150 | Pencil signature and numbering in Arabic numerals, such as 57/150. |
| Edition of 75 | Pencil signature and numbering in Roman numerals, commonly using LXXV as the denominator. |
| Artist’s proofs and other impressions | Exact inscriptions and documentation of the issue. A proof designation does not automatically establish a higher value. |
Printed inscriptions naming Chagall or Sorlier are separate from Chagall’s handwritten pencil signature. Photograph both the image inscriptions and the sheet margins.
Paper, Dimensions and Catalogue References
The series was printed on Arches wove paper. Sheet dimensions vary, so record the full sheet separately from the frame or visible opening. Individual compositions have Charles Sorlier catalogue references, often written “CS”; Avenue de la Victoire à Nice is CS 31. Leave framed artwork in place for an initial inquiry.
What is your Nice and the Côte d’Azur lithograph worth? The composition, edition, signature, color freshness and condition affect the evaluation. For a complete set, original materials and completeness also matter. Read our Marc Chagall value guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I sell one lithograph from the series?
Yes. We consider individual compositions as well as complete twelve-work sets. Send photographs and any edition or ownership information you have.
Does Roman numbering mean it is an artist’s proof?
Not by itself. The series includes an edition of 75 numbered in Roman numerals. We check the full inscription and documented edition before describing a sheet as a proof.
Can a lithograph after Chagall carry his signature?
Yes. Documented impressions in this series were signed in pencil by Chagall. His signature and Sorlier’s role should both be included in an accurate description.
What condition details should I photograph?
Show any fading, staining, foxing, tears, trimmed margins, tape residue or repairs. Include the reverse and accessible sheet edges, using even light without filters.
