About Chagall’s Le Cirque, 1967
Published by Tériade in Paris in 1967, Cirque combines Chagall’s own text with 38 original lithographs: 23 in color and 15 in black. Acrobats, clowns, musicians and animals populate the series, catalogued as Mourlot 490–527 and Cramer Books 68.
Chagall returned to circus imagery throughout his career. A circus subject or the title Le Cirque alone does not establish that a work belongs to this particular publication.

Book Edition and Individually Signed Suite
The original book and separate signed color suite have different edition structures. Individual sheets should be matched to the correct format before discussing value.
| Edition or format | Identifying details |
|---|---|
| Book edition of 250 | Contains 38 lithographs. Chagall signed the justification page; individual illustrations were issued unsigned. There were also 20 hors-commerce copies. |
| Separate color suite of 24 | Contains the 23 color lithographs, individually signed and numbered, with margins. |
| Proof impressions | Require identification of the particular proof designation and issue. A proof is not automatically worth more than a numbered impression. |
An unsigned book lithograph can still be an original. A handwritten signature alone does not establish authenticity, and a printed signature should be distinguished from a hand signature.
Paper, Dimensions and Production
The lithographs were printed on Arches paper. Dimensions differ between book sheets and the signed suite; three book compositions were issued as folded double-page sheets. Record sheet measurements separately from the frame or visible opening. Leave framed artwork in place for an initial inquiry.
What is your Le Cirque lithograph worth? The exact composition, edition, signature, color freshness and condition affect the evaluation. For a complete set, original materials and missing sheets also matter. Read our Marc Chagall value guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I sell a single Le Cirque lithograph?
Yes. We consider individual compositions as well as complete books and signed suites. Include the Mourlot number if known, or send a clear photograph so we can begin identifying the image.
Does a central fold reduce its value?
Some double-page book illustrations were issued folded. An original publication fold should be distinguished from later creases, tears or repairs and evaluated within the correct edition.
Are the black-and-white lithographs original?
The 1967 book includes 15 original lithographs in black alongside its 23 color lithographs. Medium, publication and edition details should still be verified for the individual sheet.
What should I photograph for a complete set?
For the book, photograph all 38 lithographs, text, title and justification pages, covers and case. For the separate signed color suite, photograph all 23 compositions and their signatures and numbering. Mention missing materials or known condition issues.
