About Chagall’s Daphnis et Chloé
Published by Tériade in Paris in 1961 and printed by Mourlot, Daphnis et Chloé contains 42 original color lithographs illustrating Longus’s pastoral romance. The compositions follow the young lovers through encounters, separations and their eventual marriage. The series is catalogued as Mourlot 308–349 and Cramer Books 46.
Selected Daphnis et Chloé Lithographs
Book Edition and Individually Signed Suite
The same composition can appear in different documented formats. Identify the edition before comparing signatures, dimensions or value.
| Edition or format | Identifying details |
|---|---|
| Book edition of 250 | Signed on the justification page; the individual lithographs were not issued with handwritten signatures. Some compositions have an original central fold. |
| Separate suite of 60 | Lithographs individually signed and numbered in pencil, issued with margins. |
| Proofs and other impressions | Require documentation of their particular issue and inscriptions. A proof designation does not automatically establish a higher value. |
A detached book lithograph may be an original even without an individual signature. Conversely, a signature alone does not establish authenticity or identify the correct edition.
Paper, Dimensions and Production
The lithographs were printed on Arches paper. Dimensions vary between the book and signed suite, and between single-page and double-page compositions. Record sheet measurements separately from the frame or visible opening. For an initial inquiry, leave framed artwork in place and photograph any accessible margins, inscriptions and labels.
What is your Daphnis et Chloé lithograph worth? The composition, edition, color freshness, condition and portfolio completeness affect the evaluation. Read our Marc Chagall value guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I sell one lithograph from the series?
Yes. We consider individual compositions as well as complete books and signed suites. Let us know whether the work came from a portfolio and whether any related materials remain.
Does a central fold mean the work is damaged?
Some double-page book lithographs were issued folded. An original publication fold should be distinguished from later creases, tears or other damage.
What should I send for a complete portfolio?
Photograph all 42 compositions, the justification and title pages, and the original covers and case. Mention missing sheets, detached pages, repairs or other known condition issues.
Can you begin without a certificate?
Yes. Send the photographs and records you have. Our initial review may lead to requests for further documentation or physical inspection before a purchase decision.
